Citrix training in the new, modular set-up

Wednesday, August 31st, 2016

Citrix trainingThe Citrix training courses cover products in the area of Virtualization (XenApp, XenDesktop, XenServer), Networking (NetScaler, NetScaler Gateway) and Mobility (XenMobile).

A frequent complaint among trainees is that the courses take too long or don’t offer the exact subjects one is interested in. This is especially the case when it concerns updates or new technologies.

There is good news: Citrix has taken these critiques to heart and has launched a complete new set-up of training curriculum in 2016. The courses have gotten a set-up that is highly modular. The courses in the area of Networking are already available in the new set-up. In the area of Virtualization new modules are also already added; there will be more titles coming out later this year.

Because the courses were renewed anyway the additional labs are also refreshed straightaway, resulting in assignments that will fit the practice better. Furthermore the explanation is improved (video’s with commentary by experts are now part of the courses, among other things,) and the lab performance is highly improved.

Changes in Citrix courses for Networking

I mentioned it before: the courses have gotten a set-up that is highly modular? What does that mean exactly?

Nowadays the 5-day courses CNS-220 and CNS-222 consists of a 3-day ‘base training’ and a 2-day ‘specialism’. There are 2 specialisms available:

The specialisms can only be followed after the 3-day base training of CNS-220 or CNS-222 has been taken or if the participant has taken a NetScaler training (CNS-205, CNS-207, CNS-220 or CNS-222) in the past.

The advantage? Instead of 10 days of training with overlap in subjects the participant is finished in only 7 days with a very broad orientation. Furthermore it won’t be necessary to take the courses consecutively which will make the planning more flexible.

The set-up of a real follow-up training (Citrix NetScaler 11 Advanced Implementation (CNS-301)) will be maintained. Moreover, also this training will be provided with new labs and content.

Changes in Citrix courses for Virtualization

For the sales channel Citrix has launched the ‘Long Term Service Release’ (LTSR). Customers who are satisfied with what they have waive the continuous flow of new (and often unused) functionalities and rather choose a version that is guaranteed not to be extended during the next 5 years. Alle Citrix Virtualization courses are based on the LTSR. At this time that is XenApp/XenDesktop versie 7.6.

The current range of courses consists of a 5-day entry level management training for daily managing (Managing App and Desktop Solutions with Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop 7.6 (CXD-203)) followed by a 5-day deployment training for the deploying of an enterprise-wide environment (Deploying App and Desktop Solutions with Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop 7.6 (CXD-300)). There is also a 5-day FastTrack Deploy and Manage Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop 7.6 Fast Track (CMB-300), that is a compilation of the CXD-203 and the CXD-300.

For more depth these courses can be extended with 2-day add-on modules:

The goal is to provide the Virtualization courses with the same set-up as the current Networking courses: less lengthy courses that offer more extra subjects that can be taken modular.

Changes in Citrix courses for Mobility

At this time nothing will change in these courses.

Tip: keep an eye on our blog

Citrix will keep on implementing changes in the coming period. As soon as more is known about the actual details of these changes we will inform you through this blog. Do you have any questions in the meantime? Let me know. I will be happy to help!

Citrix eLearning Subscription: what is it and why does it exist?

Tuesday, March 1st, 2016

Citrix is well known for its wide variety of products in the categories Virtualization (mainly XenApp, XenDesktop and XenServer), Networking (mainly NetScaler) and Mobility (XenMobile).

For all lines of products there are instructor-led Citrix courses available that are provided by Citrix Authorized Learning Centers like Fast Lane. Taking an instructor-led training is recommendable as exam preparation or when you want to get a handle on a technology under the guidance of an instructor and with the use of hands-on labs.

However, it may occur that certain circumstances prevent you from attending a class, at least for several concurring courses. Furthermore some people may prefer a self-study path.

In that case blended learning (a combination of both) seems a ‘best-of-both-worlds’ solution.

Citrix eLearning Subscription

Citrix stimulates blended learning. With every instructor-led Citrix course you book at a Citrix Authorized Learning Center, like Fast Lane, you will receive a so-called ‘Citrix eLearning Subscription’ of 60 days: 60 days of access to the complete Citrix eLearning library.

– – – – –

UPDATE – March 15, 2016

Citrix has announced that you will only receive the free Citrix eLearning Subscription of 60 days with Citrix trainings that take place befóre June 30, 2016.

– – – – –

The Citrix eLearning Subscription can also be ordered separate. For a fee of € 600 you will receive a subscription that will stay valid for 1 year. The eLearning can be reached 24/7. You can order the Citrix eLearning Subscription at Fast Lane.

A few properties of the Citrix eLearning:

  • In terms of content they are complete courses. Some titles offer the same content as the classroom provision, while other titles are meant as an add-on deepening on the classroom provision. There are also a few titles that cover products that do not have any classroom training available.
  • There is no possibility to gain ‘live’ hands-on experience. In general this is an important omission. Some titles contain simulations (no live labs). Other titles offer practical tasks in the form of movies.
  • Citrix indicates that Citrix eLearning may not be considered as a  full-fledged exam preparation.

Below I will provide the (current) list of titles with a short description. New titles will be added consistently. They will be added to the list automatically so that you are able to access them as well. Thus seven interesting courses have been added recently (see the label ‘New!’).

Do you have questions about the Citrix eLearning Subscription? Please let me know. I will be glad to help!

Citrix certifications: a summary

Monday, November 23rd, 2015

Citrix certifications: they come in all sorts and shapes, with accompanying exams and courses with various acronyms and codes. How do you find your way in all those certifications? In this blog post I will give a summary of all those certifications, including accompanying exams and courses.

Citrix certifications: a few general matters

Firstly a few general matters. Contrary to, for instance VMware, Citrix does not have a mandatory training. Passing one or more exams will suffice for the obtainment of a certification.

All Citrix certifications stay valid for 3 years.

If you want to prepare for an exam I recommend that you take a look on the Citrix certifications website. There you will find the so-called ‘Citrix Exam Prep Guides’ with detailed instructions on what you have to do to be ready for the taking of the exam.

Citrix certifications: old and new

Citrix certifications consist of ‘old school’ certifications and ‘new school’ certifications.

Why?

In the summer of 2013 Citrix launched a complete new version of XenApp. By now we have already reached XenApp 7.6. The new version was built on the already existing XenDesktop architecture. The new versions (7.0 and higher) are so different from the old versions (6.5 and lower) that you could actually say they are a whole new product altogether.

Ample reason to maintain certifications for the old versions as well as certifications for the new versions. The certifications for the old versions are also still interesting to this day because a large installed base of XenApp 6.5 servers still exists. Citrix has announced that XenApp 6.5 will go End of Life in Augustus 2016.

In this blog I address the certifications for the new Citrix products. I will come back to certifications for the old Citrix products in a later blog post.

Virtualization certifications (Citrix XenDesktop 7.6)

Citrix certifications

Citrix Certified Associate – Virtualization (CCA-V)

Exam1Y0-201: Managing Citrix XenDesktop 7.6 Solutions
TrainingManaging App and Desktop Solutions with Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop 7.6 (CXD-203)
Someone who is CCA-V certified is a Citrix XenDesktop and/or XenApp manager who is responsible for the daily management of Citrix. Activities that are part of the remit are rolling out and providing resources with MCS and/or PVS, application management, session management, printer management and policy management.

Citrix Certified Professional – Virtualization (CCP-V)

PrerequisitesCitrix Certified Associate - Virtualization (CCA-V)
Exam1Y0-301: Deploying Citrix XenDesktop 7.6 Solutions
TrainingDeploying App and Desktop Solutions with Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop 7.6 (CXD-300)
Someone who is CCP-V certified is a Citrix XenDesktop and/or XenApp engineer who is responsible for establishing and rolling out Citrix virtualization implementations. Activities that are part of the remit are the installment, security, redundant-making and testing of the various parts of an implementation: hosts, hypervisor solutions, Controllers, StoreFront servers, Provisioning Servers and NetScalers.

Citrix Certified Expert – Virtualization (CCE-V)

PrerequisitesCitrix Certified Professional - Virtualization (CCP-V)
Exam1Y0-401: Designing Citrix XenDesktop 7.6 Solutions
TrainingDesigning App and Desktop Solutions with Citrix XenDesktop 7 (CXD-400)
Someone who is CCP-V certified is a Citrix consultant who supplies ICT solutions for an organization. The consultant has experience with the screening of all information processes and is able to present a design based upon findings, requests and restrictions. Guidance during and after the implementation is also part of the remit.

A few remarks

  • In respect of the Virtualization exams: it concerns a tiered model. CCA-V is mandatory for obtaining CCP-V, and both CCP-V and CCA-V are mandatory for obtaining CCE-V.
  • Since August 11, 2015 it is no longer possible to take exams for version 7.1 (1Y0-200, 1Y0-300 and 1Y0 400). If you have attended a course in the field of XenDesktop 7.1 or 7.5 you will run into exam questions that were not treated at the course. But if you received electronic learning materials during your course these materials will have been updated automatically. With the help of your learning materials you can still prepare for one of the new exams.
  • Since August 11, 2015 all upgrade trajectories (trajectories wherein certifications that can no longer be obtained can be converted to a renewed status) are suspended. These days anyone who is CCEA, CCEE and/or CCIA certified has to follow the whole trajectory to become certified (again).
    Networking certifications (Citrix NetScaler 10.5)

Networking certifications (Citrix NetScaler 10.5)

Citrix certifications

Source: training.citrix.com

Citrix Certified Associate – Networking (CCA-N)

Exam1Y0-253: Implementing Citrix NetScaler 10.5 for App and Desktop Solutions
TrainingCitrix NetScaler Essentials and Unified Gateway (CNS-222)
Someone who is CCA-N certified is a Citrix XenDesktop and/or XenApp and/or XenMobile manager who knows everything there is to know about security and optimization of Citrix virtualization solutions with the Citrix NetScaler (GateWay). Activities that belong to the remit are the management of secure ICA/HDX and non-ICA VPNs from random endpoints, taking care of load balancing and high availability for random backend parts, optimizing traffic flows, the management of NetScaler Gateway policies and monitoring traffic flows.

Citrix Certified Professional – Networking (CCP-N)

Exam1Y0-351: Citrix NetScaler 10.5 Essentials and Networking
TrainingCitrix NetScaler Essentials and Traffic Management (CNS-220)
Someone who is CCP-N certified is a network manager who masters all aspects of the Citrix NetScaler when it comes to security and optimization of traffic flows. Activities that belong to the remit are rolling out and implementing Citrix NetScaler (clusters), the security of the network in all its aspects, the management of authentication techniques, taking care of load balancing, high availability and disaster recovery for random front and backend parts, optimization of traffic flows and the monitoring, auditing and logging of all network processes.

A few remarks

  • The certifications CCA-N and CCP-N are independent from each other. In principle you obtain either CCA-N or CCP-N. CCA-N can be seen as the certification on the NetScaler Gateway and CCP-N can be seen as the certification on a NetScaler (Networking) Appliance.
  • The Networking exams are based upon NetScaler 10.5. The courses address Citrix NetScaler 11. This will cause no problems during the exam preparation.
  • In contrast to the earlier announcement of Citrix there will be no CCE-N certification. Thus the course Citrix NetScaler 10.5 Advanced Implementation (CNS-301) will have no accompanying certification.
  • If you possess the (old) certification CCA NetScaler 10 (exam 1Y0 A28) you are automatically CCP-N certified. So you won’t have to retake the exam.
    Mobility certification (Citrix XenMobile 10)

Mobility certification (Citrix XenMobile 10)

Citrix certifications

Source: training.citrix.com

Citrix Certified Professional – Mobility (CCP-M)

Exam1Y0-371: Designing, Deploying, and Managing Citrix XenMobile 10 Enterprise Solutions
TrainingDeploying Enterprise Mobility Solutions with Citrix XenMobile 10 (CXM-303)
Someone who is CCP-M certified is a manager who masters all aspects of the Citrix solutions for Mobile Device Management (MDM) and Mobile Application Management (MAM). Activities that belong to the remit are rolling out and implementing Citrix XenMobile (clusters), signing in, managing and removing (iOS, Android, Windows or other) mobile devices, pushing (secured) applications to mobiles, taking care of secure connections with Citrix NetScaler, integrating XenApp/XenDesktop with XenMobile and monitoring and troubleshooting mobility parts.

A few remarks

  • Since November 15, 2015, exam 1Y0-370 (focused upon XenMobile 9, AppController 9 and NetScaler 10.1) can no longer be taken. Therefore you can only still certify for XenMobile 10.
  • For managers who only manage (and hence refrain from designing, building and implementing) Citrix offers the course Managing and Supporting a Mobility Solution with Citrix XenMobile (CXM-202). There is no certification connected to this course.

Want to know more about the Citrix certifications?

As I mentioned before I will come back on the Citrix certifications for XenApp 6.5 in a later blog post. If you have any questions about the certifications, whether concerning certifications for the old or for the new versions, feel free to contact me.
